It may occur to the small number of people who've actually read about my collection before that I've already had a
Slash 4x4,
upgraded it heavily, and then sold it at a huge loss. So now I
bought another one. Why would I do that? I don't have a good
answer to that question. I'd been recently driving my RC10 SC5M
which is a 2WD short course truck, and it occurred to me that I don't
have a 4WD SCT in my collection. I remembered that the Slash was
stupid fast, so I figured a basher might be a good addition.
Instead of spending a fortune on upgrades, I figured this time I would
just get the "Ultimate Edition" that comes with everything you might
reasonably want.
The problem is that I've evolved during the intervening years and the
Slash hasn't. I'm actually pretty disappointed in it this time
around. Yes, it is pretty fast, but it also very heavy and with
the low CG chassis it is pretty useless in even short grass. It
doesn't jump very level either. It is very durable though, so at
the very least it makes an excellent basher for when I really want to go
crazy with a model and not worry too much about what might happen to
it.
One other difference this time around is that I decided to build the
model. Even though this model comes as an RTR (Ready to Run), the
first thing I did after taking it out of the box was tear is completely
apart and then rebuild it from scratch. Building a model using
only an exploded view (sans instruction model) is actually quite a
challenge. I had fun doing it and the rebuild allowed me to
document a lot more about how the chassis works.
Update: This model was destroyed in the 2022 fire. It has not been replaced.
