I've
had several Cross RC trucks and I always love them, but when this tow
truck was announced I knew it was a bit different. Tamiya semi
trucks (including tow trucks) tend to be 1/14 scale, and Cross RC
military trucks tend to be 1/12 scale, but this flatbed tow truck was
listed as 1/10 scale. That means it would actually be usable as a
recovery vehicle for my vast array of 1/10 scale RC vehicles. It
also means that this truck is absolutely huge.
This is not a crawler or a trail truck. It is rear wheel drive
with leaf springs and solid axles. The differential is manually
lockable which gives it a little bit of off road capability. It also
comes with a lot of features. It has a full light kit including
headlights, markers, tail lights, brake lights, reverse lights, turn
signals, dash lights, and even a working light bar. There is a
scale engine and transmission under the hood with the motor inside and a
two speed gearbox. The belts and fan at the front of the engine
are motorized. The bed is motorized to tip and extend
remotely. There is even a working winch at the front of the bed
for pulling vehicles on board. Hood and doors open and
latch. There are real dually wheels on the back. It uses a
metal ladder frame chassis. I added a diesel sound system.
And finally, it looks really good.
I stuck with the stock 38T brushed motor and a simple but powerful
steering servo. Gearbox shifting is done with a mini servo, and
the motors for the flatbed are powered by the BEC. I I needed all 6
channels of my radio and that still wasn't quite enough. The
truck is plenty fast on either 2s or 3s and has lots of power.
