Axial SCX6 Jeep Rubicon Project

The SCX6 is big.  On a related note, it is also not small.  Those are really the main selling points of this model.  That's not to say it isn't an excellent model in it's own right; it is.  But this is essentially an SCX10 scaled up 1.67:1.  There are some differences though:
  • The SCX 6 has straight axles compared with the portal axles on the SCX10.
  • The SCX6 has a two speed transmission like the SCX10, but does not have the dig feature.  The layout of the transmission is also quite different.
  • The SCX6 has a sensored brushless electronics system out of the box compared with the cheap brushed motor in the SCX10.

Other than that, this is pretty much the same truck with stamped frame rails, molded inner fenders, plastic beadlock wheels, 3/4-link suspension with panhard, chassis mounted steering servo, and scale engine detail up front.  The body is the same Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon scaled up with the same molded plastic details such as wheel arches, mirrors, wipers, head and tail lights, door handles, and full interior with roll bar.  The chassis has 3 different locations for batteries, each of which can hold a full sized pack.  That's a good thing since this thing eats batteries for breakfast.  I keep multiple 3s 6700 mAh packs on board when I go for a walk with this truck.

The electronics are worth a mention because they are significantly better than the standard RTR fare.  In fact, I have no intention of changing this power system.  The truck comes with a huge 56mm diameter Spektrum sensored brushless motor and speed controller.  That's right, I said sensored.  This is the first mainstream RTR I can think of that actually comes with a sensored power system.   That, along with Spektrum's licensed version of Hobbwing's FOC (Field Oriented Control) make this an incredibly smooth driving machine with perfect speed to trigger matching.  The large scale servo has 500+ oz-in of torque which would be great for a 1/10th scale, but is only adequate at this scale.  This truck weighs 25 lbs and takes some serious power to steer.

It could be argued that this truck offers nothing that the rest of my fleet doesn't already provide, but this scale makes for a completely different driving experience.  You really feel the weight and inertia of the model when driving.  The power it takes to get over obstacles is palpable.  Just don't get stuck having to carry it home from a remote location.  I have made absolutely no changes to this truck.  It is heavy enough as it is.

Update:  This model was destroyed in the 2022 fire.  It has not been replaced.
