I
didn't fully appreciate how much I loved my RC10 SC5M until I lost it
in the fire in 2022. I spent quite a bit of time trying to decide
what to replace it with, if anything. Once I decided to replace
it, I found that the SC5M had long been discontinued. The SC6.4
was just coming out which meant the now very slightly out of date SC6.2
kits were on sale. I bought one. Of course the cost of the
kit is only the tip of the iceberg with a racing chassis. You
still need electronics, wheels, tires, and a body. Just like last
time I went with all Reedy electronics. Wheels and tires are from
Proline and I've got a couple of body options.Just like the SC5M, this is a rear wheel drive racing short course truck with four wheel independent suspension. It uses an aluminum body tray and has a mid mounted transmission so the motor doesn't hang out behind the back wheels like a Slash. The chassis is narrow and light, and the shocks are big bore. Compared to the 5M, the transmission has been changed to a lay back type which moves the motor forward somewhat. This is good if you happen to be racing indoors on carpet, but actually worse for outdoor loose surfaces. The battery has also been changed to much more available shorty pack instead of the older, rarer square pack.
This truck handles great but isn't as fast as I remember, even with a very hot 6.5T motor. Maybe I need a bigger pinion. In any case, I'm very glad to have my short course truck back since it is so fun to jump. It could be argued that since I really only use it for bashing, I'd be better off with a Slash. But then I wouldn't have had the fun of building it.
