The
58078 Fire Dragon was the second model in the "Dragon" series of models which tied in with CoroCoro Comics after the
58073
Thunder Dragon only a year earlier, and already the fourth model on the
Thunder Shot chassis in only a year and a half. Like the
58075
Terra Scorcher (and unlike the first two models), this model uses dual
independent front shocks, but it otherwise a de-tuned version of the
Terra Scorcher like the older models. This model has four wheel
double wishbone suspension. The main chassis is a bathtub type
with front and
rear modular gearboxes which assemble to it. The suspension arms
are made from a softer blue plastic to absorb impacts. The shocks
are early plastic CVA oil filled type. There is a front sway bar
supplied as stock, but no ball bearings. Like most early buggies,
there is a driver included.
The Fire Dragon was re-released in 2008 as
58403
with basically no changes from the original apart from the use of an
electronic speed controller. By the time I was looking it had
become very scarce and demanded a premium price. Unbeknownst to
me, it was going to be released again as the limited edition kit
47457
in 2020. The latest version added a machined aluminum motor mount
and a precut and painted body. It was otherwise the same as
others, so far as I can tell.
I added a steel reinforcement to my A5 front suspension support like
I've done on my Thunder Shot chassis. This is a must for
durability. What else can I say that I haven't already said
before? This must be a great chassis or I wouldn't keep buying
them. Because if something was crap, that would stop me, right?
Update: This model was destroyed in the 2022 fire. It has not been replaced.
