FJ's are often wild colors, so I painted this model in
an iridescent purple/green. This kind of paint is very thin and,
as usual, I had no patience and put the coats on too thick. This
resulted in runs all over the hood. I then backed with black and
did the roof with pearl white. Sadly, the result did not have the
visual pop that I was looking for so I bought a second body and painted
it in bright pink. That was wild all right. So wild that I
hated it too. I ended up reverting the the original body (for a while).
Phase 2:
Here is the wild pink body I did as an
alternate. I spend a lot of time on the panel lines to break up
that painful wall of blazing pink. It helped, but it was still too
much. This body is going to have to find a new home.
Yes, there are real FJ's painted in bright pink like this. This is
a photo of the one I was trying to match. Note the white bezel
surrounding the grille.
Phase 3:
I finally decided to give up on the FJ40 body
altogether. It is not that I don't like this type of truck, I just
couldn't get the look I was going for and I didn't feel like rolling
the dice on a 3rd body. Since I have a bit of a Bronco theme going
in my trail truck collection already (1979 and 2021), I thought I'd
switch over to the classic 1973 Bronco body. This is the body I
originally wanted for my first CC-01 but couldn't find one available at
the time. Putting it on the CFW chassis with solid axles is even
better. This time I went with Corsa Grey which is pretty much a
light blue. I thought this color was a good match for this classic
body and it finally came out the way I was hoping. 3rd time was a
charm.
Here is an example of the real look I was trying to match.
