Tamiya BBX Project
With such a massive backlog of vintage buggy
chassis available, it is pretty rare to see Tamiya do something brand
new. Yet it 2023 they introduced the BB-01 chassis, and the first
model to use it was the BBX. This is a modern chassis but doesn't
look like the buggy chassis that all the other manufacturers are using
because it resembles a real 1:1 buggy. This is a 2WD buggy with
front double wishbone suspension and rear trailing arm suspension.
Trailing arms are a bit unusual, but they offer loads of travel and
were used before on the Avante chassis. The drivetrain is designed
with brushless power systems in mind and can support up to a 10.5T
motor (which is what I used). Shocks are fluid filled and have
aluminum bodies. The full roll cage is quite soft (made from
Nylon) but still adds a lot of strength to the lower tub chassis.
It even uses hex hardware and full ball bearings making for a premium
feel.
This thing is a real joy to drive. Like any 2WD buggy, traction
has a limit and the back end will kick out if you use too much
throttle. This is another was to say "fun". It is very
stable and jumps well. So far, it has proven durable and
reliable. I have no complaints!
