XtraCab Project
Page 1: RTR Original
This model uses the same Trail Finder II chassis as my Toyota Land Cruiser 70 which I already documented in detail. See that page, for more information about the build of the chassis.
This model comes in a deceptively small box with everything attached
except for the lights on the roll cage. The box has nice full
color photography including details of the chassis on the back.
Like all my other models that use the Trail Finder II chassis, this has
aluminum frame rails, leaf springs, solid axles, and a front mounted
motor. This particular model also has nice steel scale beadlock
wheels with center hubs and Goodyear Wrangler Tires. Virtually
everything is metal apart from the electronics box.
The real star of the show is this 1987 Toyota SR5 XtraCab body. It
comes pre-painted in black.
It has a full depth bed with a roll bar and a full interior with dash
board and door cards. My only complaint is that the metal tube
front bumper attaches to the body rather than the chassis so any strong
impact will probably break something. The body is so well done
that I didn't make any extensive changes. I only added a simple
light kit.
Here are a couple detail shots of the beautiful body. There is
fully detailed engine bay under the opening hood and a lovely scale
interior. The doors latch with magnets to stay shut on the trails.
While RC4WD makes some super scale chassis and amazing bodies, their
electronics are truly atrocious. I drove it once with the stock
electronics and just couldn't stomach them any further so I swapped out
the motor with a 5-slot from Holmes Hobbies and the ESC with a 1080 from
Hobbywing. It is much, much better to drive now. I'll keep
the stock servo until it burns up, then replace it.
