The
Dark Impact uses the DF-03 buggy chassis which was first released in
2006 as set
58370
and was black as you might expect. I have the special edition
white version
which came out in 2015. This is a 4WD chassis with ball
differentials front and
rear. It has 4 wheel double wishbone independent suspension and
CVA plastic oil shocks. Compared to classic buggies, this
thing is really well planted and jumps straight and true. It is
stable and has good traction. Of course with
the stock motor it is not that fast, but I find the speed reasonable for
the chassis capabilities. This model includes a slipper clutch
and sizable gears so it could handle considerably faster motors.
This car has a bottom loading battery tray, but it is mostly
useless. You can't reach the electrical connectors without
removing the body, so the bottom load doesn't really buy you anything
except a lower CG. Thankfully, there is room for a Li-Po but it is
a tight fit.
I
did not paint plain white but used some pearl white I happened to have
and I think it looks great. It does show dirt very easily though,
but I really like the unusual look of the white chassis parts. No
idea if the pigmentation has any impact on strength or durability, but
I've had no problems so far. My build was bone stock with no
upgrades for a long time. Recently I've made a couple of changes to
increase the speed and handling.
Years later I ended with two other buggies on the same DF-03 and
chassis, one of which even used the same body (the Avante MkII and the
DF-03 MS), so I decided I had to let this one go.
