The
Scorpion is my first Kyosho 2WD buggy build, and also represents one of
the first Kyosho ever made since the original came out in 1982.
I'm building the 2014 re-release. I have plenty of 2WD buggies
from other manufacturers, but this is nothing like any of them. I
really mean nothing. Sure, it has 4 wheels and the back two are
driven but that's about where the similarities end. The chassis
uses two aluminum rails and the center bathtub is just there to hold the
electronics. All of the mechanical parts are aluminum or
steel. The front and rear suspension are zany hybrids that take
some time to figure out, so read my assembly section for more details.
I love driving this thing. You really wouldn't know it was based
on such an old design since it is very responsive. The combination
of classic styling and modern electronics is very appealing.
Update: This model was destroyed in the 2022 fire. I was able to replace it with a nearly identical model built with the same electronics. It turns out Kyosho updates these models slightly over time. I had the original model but my replacement is 30613C and they are now on 30614D. I have no way of identifying all the changes between
version, but the obvious difference in my new model is that it has lost
the Proline tires with Goodyear white lettering on them and reverted to
standard black "Sand Super" tires. That's a shame because I
really liked those tires. They've also changed part SC206B (the pillow blocks which support the front axle). The slot which fits over the axle is now narrower, presumably to make it grip better, but the
practical result is that it doesn't fit without filing and you'll strip
the holes trying to tighten them down. I know this. The new
manual also seems to show a lot more option parts available than were in the original manual (3.5 pages instead of 1).
