Model by Benjamin Wendl

The third small Tech Play model of 1996 was the 8230 Coastal Cop Buggy. This appears to be some sort of beach buggy and comes complete with a friendly police officer in black.  Although bigger than the other two Tech Play models this year, 8230 still has only a single feature: steering.  A range of stickers represent the police logo, spotlights, and tail lights.  There's nothing really new here other than the use of flex tubing as a roll cage, though the use of uncommon white is welcome.

Features

Steering
The front wheels can be steered using a "hand of god"wheel at the top of the vehicle.  The wheel drives through a set of 12 tooth bevel gears, and then reverses at the front of the vehicle with spur gears.  A pair of 8 tooth pinions then drive the gear rack.

The steering mechanism itself uses control arms and toothed links as shown in the computer image.

There is also a crown gear protruding from the rear of the vehicle geared to the overhead control.  This gear has no apparent purpose but may be intended to represent a Power Take-Off.

Dude
This buggy is driven by a helmeted police officer sporting some sweet shades and, curiously, dressed head to toe in black.  Doesn't seem too good for the beach, but perhaps it is a chilly beach in Svalbard.
